When traveling to Japan, what kind of special place do you imagine for a memorable dining experience?
If you are looking for more than just delicious food—an authentic blend of Japanese traditional culture, breathtaking scenery, and an exclusive private atmosphere—let me introduce a very special place that my family always visits for important anniversaries. Located in Sawara Ward, Fukuoka City, “Koraku” is a legendary chicken specialty restaurant celebrating its 79th anniversary.
Stepping away from the bustling center of Tenjin, you will find that this historic restaurant offers completely private rooms for all guests.
Inside the charming, time-honored Japanese-style house, almost every room offers a panoramic view of a breathtakingly beautiful Japanese garden. While most rooms feature the traditional “Zashiki” style (sitting on tatami mats on the floor), there is one room equipped with tables and chairs, ensuring comfort for overseas guests who may not be used to sitting on the floor.
One of the most wonderful aspects of Koraku is that it reveals completely different, stunning faces depending on the time of day you visit. During lunch hours, you can enjoy a peaceful and elegant time gazing at the beautiful Japanese garden bathed in natural sunlight. However, at night, the scenery transforms entirely. Because the restaurant is located on a slight hill, you can look out over the glittering night views of Fukuoka City from your private room. The Japanese garden, illuminated by outdoor lights, also creates a fantastical and deeply atmospheric ambiance.
Spending time in this extraordinary space feels as if you have stepped back in time—it is the very essence of traditional Japanese hospitality (omotenashi).
The highlight of the dining experience here is the ultimate chicken course meal based on Fukuoka’s signature traditional hot pot dish, “Mizutaki.”
The true star of this course is the rich, milky-white chicken broth, a recipe that has been strictly preserved since the restaurant’s founding. The exceptional, signature style of this establishment is to drink this broth with just a few drops of the restaurant’s original, specially crafted ponzu (citrus-based soy sauce).
This broth is simply delicious beyond words. It is so incredibly flavorful that my family and I almost drank it all before the vegetables and the final Zosui (a comforting rice porridge made by adding rice to the remaining savory soup) could even reach the pot!
Although the menu details and prices have changed slightly over the years, the memory of smiling and sharing the phrase “Oishii ne” (It’s delicious, isn’t it?) with my family in that beautiful space—which has captivated people for 79 years—remains warmly in my heart.
Instead of visiting a commercialized restaurant straight out of a standard guidebook, why not experience the true history of Fukuoka and treat yourself to a luxurious time with an unforgettable, ultimate chicken broth?
【Payment & Access】
The nearest station is “Noke Station” on the Subway Nanakuma Line. However, since it is a considerable walk from the station, taking a taxi from Noke Station or the Tenjin area is highly recommended and the most seamless way to get there. Please note that credit cards and electronic payments are not accepted; this restaurant is strictly cash only, so be sure to prepare Japanese Yen before your visit. As all dining spaces are completely private, prior reservations are absolutely essential.
